Singers need to overcome THIS!

If you know you want to sing and you imagine yourself doing so, but you’re constantly pulling away and not allowing yourself then you’re probably struggling with this one thing!

You know you can sing and you visualize yourself doing it! You sing in the shower or in front of the mirror when you’re alone and nobody is watching. You’re carefree and you let loose and sing out with freedom and no limitation. You hit every note perfectly and you think for a brief moment, “I want people to hear me sing.”

But the second you have an opportunity to sing in front of people, all that freedom and bravery you experienced when you were alone, disappears!

Where did it go? Where did the bravery and courage disappear to?

Well, my dear singers, its safe to say that one of the greatest deterrents a singer faces at some point is giving in to that pesky feeling called DOUBT! Nothing stops singers more from singing than self doubt.

WHAT IS SELF DOUBT?

The definition of self doubt is the “lack of confidence in oneself and one's abilities.” You’re ok to sing in front of the mirror to yourself because you know no one is judging you at that moment. But when you know you have to put yourself on display whether it is in front of an audience (no matter how big or how small the audience is), there’s this overwhelming sensation of self doubt that swallows up your confidence.

It causes singers to believe a false lie. The lie is that you’re not good enough, you don’t have what it takes, you’re not a good singer. Nothing could be further from the truth:

  • You ARE good enough!

  • You DO have what it takes!

  • You ARE a GREAT singer!

You just have to BELIEVE it! What you believe is what you become!

OVERCOME SELF DOUBT!

Do you know that when you give power to the false belief that you’re not good enough, you self fulfill that very thought that you’re not good enough? Likewise, if you transform your way of thinking and GIVE POWER to the belief that you ARE good enough, then you also self fulfill that very thought. You BECOME good enough!

I know, I know! It’s easier said than done! It’s easy to retreat and hide away and give power to negative thinking. But its more POWERFUL, when you shake off the negative thought, take action and step up to the mic and say to yourself, “I can do this!” “I was made for this” and allow yourself to be perfectly imperfect.

STEPS TO BE FREE FROM SELF DOUBT!

If you we don’t take control over negative thinking, then negative thinking will always have control over us and prevent us from doing the things we love! Here’s a few things you can do to free yourself from self doubt and step into SELF BELIEF!

  1. Give yourself permission to be GREAT

No matter if you’re singing before an audience of 1 or 1,000, give yourself permission to be GREAT. How do you do this? Recognize that you have a gift! Gifts are of no use if they remain hidden! You must allow yourself to share your gift! Some people will absolutely love your gift to sing and will be drawn to you and will want to hear more. And there may be others who may not love it, but they should not stop you from sharing. You owe it to the people who will love and appreciate you, be GREAT for them. You have an audience that wants to hear you!

  2. Be Uniquely You

Your gift to sing comes with everything you need to be GREAT. Don’t try to be like someone else or sound like other artists. Be uniquely you! Your tone, your timbre were given to you for you to show up as a singer! Learn from your favorite singers but do yourself a favor and do not compare yourself to them. Be confident in the gift you were given and show up to be the unique singer you were designed to be. Audiences do not want to hear imitators, they appreciate authenticity. You are AUTHENTIC and the world deserves your authenticity.

  3. Trust Yourself

Most times, singers who struggle with self doubt do so because they don’t trust their ability. All that’s needed to trust yourself is to develop your skills further! Practice, practice, practice! Spend time practicing and getting better! Confidence is developed when you know your song from beginning to end and end to beginning! Don’t just wing it! Learn your lyrics, record yourself on video and find ways to improve your delivery. Also, invest in yourself by connecting with a coach who can guide you on vocal technique! These actions will create confidence that will easily improve your self belief that you were meant to sing!

GO FOR IT!

You now have the knowledge to know what to do the next time you are feeling self doubt. Go on and be amazing and don’t let ANYTHING stop you from singing! Go on and SING!

Keep being amazing,
MRJ
